Building Confidence in SDA Housing Rights

People with disabilities living in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) are gaining a stronger understanding of their housing rights through a new project led by VALID in partnership with Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service.

“The project helps tenants know where they stand when it comes to evictions, mistreatment, or issues with providers,” said Kali Karipidis, Housing Justice Project Officer.

Working alongside Villamanta, VALID Self Advocacy Senior Project Officer Sandra Murphy and VALID Project Workers Tarus Fiu and Johnny Riha visit SDA homes and community spaces to talk directly with tenants about their experiences and rights.
“We’re helping people who are struggling in SDAs understand and stand up for their rights,” said Sandra.

The project aims to deliver 75 SDA rights presentations and provide at least 60 referrals to Villamanta for people who need legal or advocacy support. Tenants can choose to meet at home or in a public space such as a library or community centre – whatever feels most safe and accessible.

By offering flexible and inclusive options, the VALID team is helping people with disability make informed choices, understand their housing rights, and feel confident speaking up when things go wrong.
