VALID and FIN Victoria held the Steps To Speaking Up forum on Thursday 12 July in Bendigo. David Petherick, Deputy CEO of VALID, emceed the forum. Projects supporting parents with disability engaged with the child protection system were showcased.
The Positive Powerful Parents group presented about their new project developing training modules for Child Protection workers. Julie, Susan and Heather also shared their personal stories.
Laura from Victoria Legal Aid presented about the new Independent Family Advocacy and Support pilot project. This project came from one of the recommendations made in their Child Protection Legal Aid Services Review.
The forum concluded with the launch of the new Steps to Speaking Up advocacy manual and discussion of the next step of the project – Reaching Out.
Steps to Speaking Up: Important things to know about the Child Protection system for parents with disabilities in Victoria is a 40-page booklet which uses clear sections and headings and an easy to read layout to help parents with disability understand and navigate the child protection system in Victoria. .
