VALID’s position on Supported Decision Making is that genuine and co-designed efforts towards supporting the true decisions of every individual with intellectual disability are critical. At present, this is not happening nearly enough:
I can support someone with their NDIS goals.
I can tell them they are entitled to choose who they live with and who supports them.
But the NDIA will not provide that person with all their options.Advocate Tweet
Without genuine and co-designed efforts towards better Supported Decision Making, legal and policy amendments are just politics for many.
Will my support person be upset if I change my mind? Even though they’re meant to not have an opinion or take a side, people do.
